Overview:

Youth Camp Counselors and extended camp counselors is an energetic individual with creative ideas to lead children in fun and safe activities, both inside and outside. Counselors will be responsible for completing lessons plans, supervision of the children at all times.

This conditional offer of employment is contingent on an individual’s ability to satisfy the qualifications and perform duties listed below:

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age for Day Camp Counselor.
  • Must have or willing to obtain for employment, CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Must authorize and successfully undergo a criminal history background check pursuant to 70 ILCS 1205/8-23.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Must attend all workshops and training prior to working.
  • Attends all staff meetings.
  • Keeps all camp supplies & equipment orderly and in proper storage locations.
  • Maintain safety at all times and reports any known safety hazards to Camp Director.
  • Provide a safe environment while always supervising children.
  • Plans activities that are fun and educational for the kids.
  • Maintain order and adhere to all policies of the park district.
  • Understand, organize, and conduct the camp within the concept and outline determined by the park district through the supervisor.
  • Organize and conduct the program as structured and planned considering the age, number and ability of the children through proper staff assignment making full and effective use of facility, equipment, supplies and time available.
  • Keep Camp Directors informed of all activities, suggestions, problems, and other ideas.
  • Promotes and stimulates good relationships with the participants’ parents.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public using tact and diplomacy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Park District policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain self-control and composure in difficult situations.
  • Appearance must be neat and appropriate.
  • Ability to accept and administer constructive criticism or supervision.
  • Must be punctual and dependable.
  • Must wear staff t-shirt, and name tag while on duty.
  • Must adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Marginal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist with daily tasks.
  • Maintain the picnic shelter, camp shed, and additional facilities of use.

Psychological Considerations:

All Counselors will cooperate with co-workers, pool staff, and administrative staff. Must maintain good public relations and are enthusiastic supporters of the park district and its programs. Treat all children and staff equally. All counselors are responsible for the campers in the pool. Counselors must be wearing a swimming suit (pre-approved) while at the pool. The counselors must be stationed around the pool area, watching the children at all times.

Environmental Considerations:

All staff will be exposed to outside weather considerations, i.e. cold rain, hot, etc. Staff attire is required as follows: Staff shirt, gym shoes, first aid kit, tablets, phones, sunscreen, swim suit, towel, and daily lunch.

Cognitive Considerations:

Staff must be able to follow directions from supervisors with a safe follow through. Must demonstrate good safety awareness and judgment.

Job Type: Part-time

Salary: $15.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30 – 40 per week

Schedule:

 

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

 

Experience:

 

  • Childcare: 1 year (Preferred)

 

License/Certification:

 

  • First Aid Certification (Preferred)
  • CPR Certification (Preferred)
