POSITION OVERVIEW

This position offers a rare opportunity to make a profound and lasting impact on building brighter futures for young mothers and children in the Missoula community. As a member of the Leadership Team, the Senior Director of Philanthropy will play an integral leadership role within the organization and work closely with the Executive Director, Board, and colleagues. The Senior Director of Philanthropy will provide a vision and create systems of accountability for Mountain Homeʼs fundraising and community engagement efforts, as well as serve as an exceptional and strategic fundraiser who continues to build a comprehensive development program. This position reports to the Executive Director and supervises the Development Director and Development Coordinator. The Senior Director of Philanthropy is responsible for managing and strengthening key functional components of the fundraising program – including annual, major, and planned giving, foundation and government grants, corporate giving, events, and development operations – serving as one of the organization’s most important external voices, and leading the vision for effective development of communications materials and strategies for all stakeholders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Vision and Program Assessment (15%)

  • Design, implement, and lead a comprehensive multi-year fundraising strategic plan that will contribute to the success of the organization’s significant revenue growth goals over the next two to three years (current $5M annual budget, growing to $6.5-7M, including funding coming from strategies outside the development team’s purview).
  • Immediately jump into supporting the end of our capital campaign, including crafting strategies to close gifts this fiscal year.
  • Create and implement a plan to significantly expand the number of individual major gift donors to roughly quadruple the revenue stream coming from individuals (as opposed to foundations and corporate giving entities), from roughly $500k to $2M in the next two to three years. This work will include a need to think strategically about pipeline development.
  • Create, train team members in, and implement strategies to increase the pipeline of legacy / planned gifts to ensure long-term support for Mountain Home. Ensure that planned giving strategies and solicitations are embedded into the burgeoning major gifts program from the get-go.
  • Establish a clear system of assessment for the development program so that the team, Executive Director, and Board know quarterly and annually how progress is moving forward.
  • Oversee the preparation and monitoring of an annual fundraising budget.
  • Ensure timely and accurate fundraising reporting, adhere to fundraising policies and procedures, and collaborate with the finance department to reconcile fundraising reports in a timely manner.

Individual and Foundation Gifts Portfolio (60%)

  • Manage a portfolio of roughly 40-60 donors and prospects, composed of individuals, foundations, and corporations with capacity to make gifts between $25k - $99k.
  • Provide deep support for the Executive Director with their portfolio of donors and prospects (roughly 25-40 leads with a giving capacity of $100k+), including, but not limited to, driving strategies and scheduling visits for the ED and themselves to engage donors.
  • Develop and implement uniquely tailored strategies for each donor and prospect to move through the moves management process (identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, negotiation, and stewardship phases of work).
  • Secure, plan, and engage in face-to-face donor visits as a key performance indicator, including making verbal and written solicitations.
  • In concert with the Executive Director, work with the Board of Directors by leveraging their resources, skills, stories, and networks in support of Mountain Homeʼs fundraising and strategic goals.
  • Submit donor visit notes, engagement efforts, and other interactions to the Development Coordinator for data entry in Bloomerang on a weekly basis. Perform data entry tasks to provide back-up at miscellaneous points during the year.
  • Actively participate in weekly, monthly, and quarterly Development team meetings to discuss portfolio activity and performance and make modifications based on data-informed decisions.
  • Maintain working knowledge of programmatic priorities and issues as they occur.

Management (10%)

  • Manage a team of two full-time fundraising staff members (Development Director and Development Coordinator) and one Communications / Marketing Coordinator (supervised by the Development Director).
  • Recruit and provide training and leadership to the development team; motivate, inspire, manage, and develop staff, enabling them to exceed goals; advise and direct process improvement of fundraising activities.

Annual Development Activities (5%)

  • Design and manage the implementation of the overall strategy of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship engagement for the entire donor file, roughly 1500 records, including tactics like an annual development calendar, events, appeal mailings, and more.
  • Assure an accurate and up-to-date donor database (Bloomerang) and foster a culture of embracing this tool as a key component of fundraising success.

Community Engagement and Marketing (5%)
