The Opportunity
Temple Beth-El seeks a part-time Communications Associate to become part of a dynamic team and organization. The Communications Associate will work closely with members of the staff and clergy to help organize and implement communication efforts, including the monthly newsletter, social media postings, email, and website. They will serve as editor, ensuring that all messages are delivered with one consistent voice. They are the keeper of the “Temple Beth-El brand” so that all communications have a consistent look and feel. The role supports the Temple’s mission as a caring Jewish community that warmly welcomes and engages congregants by providing a wide variety of religious, spiritual, educational, and communal opportunities.
What You’ll Do
The Shofar (monthly print & digital newsletter)
● Work with the Communications Committee on an annual editorial plan.
● Gather and edit content (copy and images) for each of the 10 issues per year. Facilitate and coordinate submissions from all sectors, including the religious school, committees, clergy, brotherhood, sisterhood, development, etc.
● Assign writers and photographers in anticipation of future content requirements.
● Ensure that all significant events are photographed.
● Maintain a photo archive as a resource for all communications media.
● For each issue, create a page map for content flow and fit.
● Review all content for accuracy, spelling, syntax and consistency according to Temple Beth-El’s editorial standards.
● Write introductory text, photo captions, table of contents, and event advertisements.
● Create a cover concept.
● Supervise layout and design utilizing the existing brand template.
The Website
● Assess the effectiveness of the current website as a tool of engagement for congregants and the larger community.
● Facilitate improvements on the website.
● Ensure that all information is current and accessible.
● Assess the online donation and event registration process to ensure that they are easy to use.
● Explore the creation and maintenance of a blog. Edit and upload content stream. Monitor responses.
Email Communications
● Assess the effectiveness of our current email strategy and timing.
● Gather information and write content.
● Gather and format imagery.
● Maintain an up-to-date email address list.
Social Media
● Work with the Communications Committee on the creation of a social media plan, identifying appropriate social media channels, topics, and frequency of posts.
● Work with a designer to create on-brand design templates that fit the technical requirements of different platforms.
● Gather assets, write messaging, create posts, and monitor comments.
● Create and test event registration and donation clicks.
● Explore the possibility of creating an online community space where congregants are encouraged to share.
External Communications
● Identify newsworthy content for external media.
● Identify appropriate media outlets.
● Write and submit press releases.
● Facilitate interviews with reporters and supply photography.
● Write and coordinate the design of advertisements and holiday greetings.
● Purchase ad space, confirm technical specifications and submit artwork.
● Coordinate with community agencies, eg. the Jewish Alliance, to ensure that all information (such as the event calendar and “about us” information in Jewish Rhode Island) is accurate and up to date.
What You'll Need
● Appreciation for the mission, vision, and values of Temple Beth-El.
● A high level of enthusiasm for working within a professional environment.
● A high level of comfort with Adobe Suite and online platforms. Must be adept with spreadsheets, data imports and exports, and mail merge.
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build genuine relationships with Temple staff, board members, donors, funders, partners, and community members.
● Self-motivated to meet deadlines.
What You'll Get:
This is a part-time position, (24 hrs/wk), with most hours expected to be working in the office (located in Providence, Rhode Island) each week, but the ability to consider partial remote work. This is a collaborative team that believes in working together to ensure that our organization’s mission, vision, and values are reflected. We work closely in partnership with our lay leadership and community. Generous pension plan available. Salary range: $20-$30/hour, depending on experience.
