The Infant/Toddler Assistant Teacher is responsible for following and implementing the daily Montessori program for enrolled children. The role includes helping to provide appropriate practices and high-quality Montessori education in a manner that fosters the child’s self-construction, ability to persevere a challenge, and extend grace and courtesy toward themselves and others. The role is reflective of the Felician Sisters’ Core Values for Ministry (Respect for Human Dignity, Compassion, Justice & Peace, Solidarity with People in Need, and Transformation).

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma (minimum)
  • May also be certified in accordance with the American Montessori Society, Association Montessori International, or NAMC to teach in a Montessori toddler classroom
  • May also have Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in early childhood education, child development and/or other related fields (preferred)
  • May also have an Infant and Toddler Child Development Associate (CDA)
  • Exemplary interpersonal, collaborative and planning skills, including classroom management (indoors and outdoors), under the direct guidance of the Lead teacher and in accordance with their instruction, whether they are present or absent
  • Interest and ability to effectively support children and their families within MCOL protocols
  • Must use appropriate language based on Montessori philosophy tenets
  • Ability to consistently work cooperatively and professionally with people in and outside of the classroom
  • Ability to respond positively to work direction and guidance from others in a timely manner
  • The Infant/Toddler Assistant Teacher shall be a sensitive and mature person who has experience working with young children in addition to the following:
    • Relates to children and adults in a caring and professional manner
    • Strives to meet the needs of children and their families within MCOL protocols
    • Criminal background check required and deemed eligible for employment by the State of MI

Performance Duties:

  • Have a deep respect and love for young children
  • Interact with students through kindness, using positive and compassionate redirection
  • Supervise students and maintain order in the school area (indoors and outdoors)
  • Positive and consistent cooperation with administration, faculty, and staff in supporting and implementing policies, including the disciplinary policies
  • Teach the Montessori curriculum and serve as assigned by the Lead Teacher. The duties of the Infant/Toddler Assistant Teacher include: implementing the Lead Teachers vision each day, keeping all required records, submitting on time all necessary reports and records to school administration, maintaining a clean and safe classroom and outdoor environment
  • Be present (emotionally and physically) each school day to fulfill professional obligations including accessibility to students, parents, other faculty members and administration
  • Attendance at open house, intake, and transition meetings and parent/teacher conferences and additional meetings as required by the Program Director or Head of School
  • Attendance at faculty, committee and in-service meetings, as well as professional development/workshops, during or outside the regular school hours as requested by the Head of School
  • Acquire all school supplies, books or materials through the administrative team, by use of its official procedures

Demands (Physical and Special):

  • Ability to sit (25%), walk/stand (75%), routinely throughout the day
  • Must be able to periodically lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have functional senses/manual dexterity to carry out the job and communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of child development (birth to age three years)
  • Knowledge of grammar and spelling for daily verbal and written communication
  • Ability to keep confidences regarding staff, parents & children

Environmental Conditions:

  • Performs duties with exposure to infectious or communicable diseases inherent to the care of children
  • Occasional exposure to loud or unpleasant voices due to unpredictable behavior of children
  • Daily exposure to outdoor elements (sun, wind, cold, etc.)

  • Demonstrates adherence to State of Michigan Licensing Rules for Child Care Centers, Great Start to Quality and Felician Annual Ministry Assessment, as well as policies and procedures of The Felician Sisters Child Care Centers, Inc.
  • Demonstrates punctuality and adheres to attendance policies and their protocols
  • Demonstrates a positive mindset that is solution-oriented
  • Uses resources in a cost-effective manner and manages own work activities efficiently and effectively
  • Demonstrates initiative and seeks opportunities to enhance operating performance
