The Staff Engineer is a key role responsible for working closely with various personnel in the Construction Services Department to ensure the department runs as smoothly as possible. Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Required to drive, stand, walk, use hands to type, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, talk, and hear; body motions and movements include bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing, with or without reasonable accommodation

• The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation

• Job site conditions may or may not be accessible by vehicle, including wetlands, swamps, grasslands, and fields with uneven surfaces, sand, brush, and other natural and man-made obstacles

• This job is primarily performed in an office setting, but field visits may be required where regular exposure to outside weather conditions and construction sites where the noise level is usually moderate to loud

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, tests, and aerial photographs on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and other topographical and geologic data to plan and design project
  • Calculates cost and determines the feasibility of the project based on analysis of collected data
  • Prepares or directs preparation and modification of reports, specifications, plans, testing schedules, and designs for the project
  • Inspects construction sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to engineering test plans, specifications, and safety standards
  • Works closely with the laboratory personnel to ensure projects, test results, and similar elements of the Construction Services Department are being addressed properly and thoroughly
  • Directs where necessary activities at the project site
  • Uses computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents
  • Ensure that all testing equipment used is functioning properly, maintained as required by company and/or manufacturer's policy and that all calibrated equipment is within its calibration cycle
  • Ensure that project testing requirements are met and compliant with project specifications, requirements, and company policies or procedures
  • Complete daily time and labor reports in accordance with company policy
  • Turn in required paperwork daily
  • Regular attendance is required
  • Must be flexible to changing schedules and hours to support business needs. Overnight and weekends schedules may be necessary to support business needs
  • Follow all company safety procedures and policies
  • Other duties may be assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (in accordance with our Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle Record Check Criteria)
  • Ability to pass a background check screening in accordance with Florida’s Jessica Lunsford Act (or equivalent state classification)
  • Engineering Intern (E.I.) Certification
  • Ability to read & write, including interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as the ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and customers/clients
  • Computer skills sufficient to operate a laptop, including sending and receiving emails, and the ability to learn Field Data Collection (FDC)/Inspector Gadget to input data and prepare reports
  • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Reasoning ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in civil or geotechnical engineering from a four-year college or university; one to two years of experience and/or training
