The Anacortes Waterfront Alliance (AWA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to waterfront access, preservation and experience.  AWA is currently seeking enthusiastic summer staff to join our team. If you're into the idea of spending your summer on the waters of Fidalgo Bay, sharing your love for sailing, and creating lasting memories, we'd love to have you on hop aboard. Employment Status.  AWA summer staff are classified as non-exempt, hourly employees. 

Hours & Compensation. The 2024 summer camp season is 8 weeks from July 8th - August 29th, 2024 with some training and maintenance opportunities is the month of June. A work week will consist of up to 40 hours per week. Any overtime must be approved in advance by the Sailing Program Manager. Typical work weeks will be full days Monday- Thursday and a half day on Friday. The hourly pay range for summer staff is $16.50 - $17.50 per hour based on experience and credentials.

Job Descriptions.  

AWA will be hiring several summer staff members for the Summer 2024 season. Staff will likely fill multiple rolls from instructing sailing to staffing the rental kiosk throughout the summer. 

  1. Summer Camp Assistant Instructors 
  • Assist with the instruction of youth water sports, beginner, intermediate, and advanced sailing courses 
  • Assist with the instruction of basic sailing courses for adult participants 
  • Assist with water safety swim tests at the pool 
  • Communicate effectively with class participants and lead instructor
  • Help prepare sailing equipment and supplies for participants
  • Safely and effectively run a motorized safety boat (if qualified)
  • Lead private lessons for individuals or small groups (if qualified)  

 

  1. Rental Kiosk Staff 
  • Gather boats and necessary gear for rental times
  • Assist public in all aspects of rentals
  • Run safety briefings and sailing skills checks
  • Act as a rescue boat in the event of emergency (if qualified)
  • Basic maintenance of equipment and facilities (if qualified)
  • Keep Kiosk space clean and organized 

Prefered Qualifications.

  1. Responsible individual who is enthusiastic about on the water activities
  2. Experience working with youth and able to teach both basic and advanced concepts to all age groups 
  3. Must be 16 years of age
  4. Washington State Boater Education Card (required to operate AWA safety boats)
  5. First-Aid CPR certification
  6. Experience with rigging and handling sailing dinghies (Lidos, Terras, Zests, Lasers and FJs)
  7. Be able to lift up to 50 pounds, have the stamina to occasionally stand, work and sail for a full day of 6-8 
  8. US Sailing Level 1 Certification (not required, but pay will reflect candidate having the certification) 

 

Zero Tolerance of Harassment.  This position interacts with younger staff, students, and members of the public.  Your obligation to guard against any form of harassment or inappropriate conduct involving such persons is critical.  You are subject to, and should implement for all staff, a “zero tolerance” policy for any form of harassment or inappropriate conduct at all times.
