Church Sexton Position Description

A sexton is an officer of a church or congregation charged with the maintenance of its buildings.

The sexton serves to maintain a high standard of cleanliness and readiness of Church facilities to enable the work and ministry of the congregation and to create a pleasant atmosphere for members, guests, and staff.

This includes deep cleaning of the kitchen, restrooms, church, and general gathering space(s), as well as basic household chores and changing out supplies as needed.

 

The sexton will advise the Operations Manager and the Rector of dangers/concerns about the condition and maintenance of buildings and grounds.

Scheduled Work Hours:

Monday:              8:00 am - 1:30 pm

Wednesday:        8:00 am - 1:30 pm

Thursday:            8:00 am - 1:30 pm

Saturday:            8:00 am - 1:30 pm

Sunday:               8:00 am - 1:00 pm

 

While the above schedule during the week will need to be somewhat flexible, availability to work during these hours is required. Overtime is seldom required and will be compensated for as legally required.


 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Daily

  • Keep and maintain a 30-day supply of regularly used cleaning and maintenance supplies.
  • Keep all church entrances and yards clear of debris/litter.
  • Keep leaves, sand, and dirt away from entrances.
  • Rotate the Vacuuming/Sweeping/Dusting of all work areas at least once a week or more if needed.
  • Make sure all bathroom/kitchen areas are clean and have adequate supplies as needed.
  • Make sure all trash is emptied and recycled in an appropriate manner.
  • Set up tables/misc. for meetings and special services as requested by Rector/Staff.
  • Monitor heating/cooling thermostats making sure they are turned on or off as required.
  • Close and lock entrances and exits as required each day and after special events.
  • Report safety and repair issues to the Operations Manager.

Weekly

  • Prepare the Sanctuary for services.
  • Open and close church before and after functions.
  • Clean outdoor entrances and light fixtures.
  • Monitor interior lighting in all the buildings on campus and replace bulbs as needed.
  • Clean doors and windows within reach as scheduled.
  • Provide an inventory list of needed supplies to the Operations Manager promptly.

 

As needed

  • Assist in taking down and putting back seasonal decorations in the Sanctuary with direction from the Rector, Music Minister, Altar Guild, or Operations Manager.
  • Set up and clean up tables and chairs before and after weddings, funeral services, and other functions.
  • Maintain storage areas in a neat and accessible manner
  • Other duties may be required.


 

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

  • Alignment with and commitment to the mission, vision, and values of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Tustin.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with a variable work schedule, depending on the season and events on the Church calendar. Scheduled work shifts can vary from 6:30 am to 10:00 pm.
  • Must be able to work Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Holy Week & Easter, and Thanksgiving as assigned; alternate days off are provided in coordination with your supervisor.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • At least one year of related janitorial or custodial experience is strongly preferred.
  • Able to lift 40 pounds and climb stairs and ladders as required.
  • Able to perform, regularly, moving tables, stacking chairs, moving, and setting up sound systems, and occasionally moving office furniture.
  • Able to use cleaning and maintenance materials and equipment safely.
  • Able to work cooperatively as a member of a team and independently; able to work tactfully under pressure.
  • Able to interact courteously and respectfully with diverse staff, volunteers, congregation members, visitors, vendors, and clients.
  • Able to communicate verbally and in writing in English; basic computer skills needed to read, comprehend, and respond to written instructions, schedules, notifications, and emails.

Supervision

The Sexton works for the Rector (as staff) and reports to the Operations Manager. Other members of the staff may occasionally request assistance when needs arise in their areas of ministry. We are a close staff who are dependent upon each other to carry out both our individual and church-wide ministries as a team. Candidates for this position must complete the required background check.

 

Hours and Compensation

This position will start at 25 hours per week, with the possibility of additional hours as needed. Competitive pay is based on experience.
