JOB DESCRIPTION
RESIDENT ASSISTANT
(CARE GIVER)
I. Job Summary:
Under the immediate supervision of the Nurse Director and the Resident Director, performs a variety of routine activities in providing assisted and supportive care to the residents.
II. Job Relationships:

2. Occasional Contact:
a. Persons involved with outside activities with residents.
III. Basic Duties:
A. Standard I:
Under supervision of the Resident Director shall provide assisted and supportive care to residents.
Performance Criteria:
1. Provide assistance as needed in personal hygiene of residents. Personal hygiene measures include, but are not limited to, assistance with bathing, showers, oral care, setting and combing hair, laundry, changing linens, etc.
2. If scheduled kitchen relief, and on a daily basis serving of meals and clean up.
3. Daily maintenance of facility. This includes housekeeping activities in all common areas, bathrooms and bedrooms.
4. Initiates and assists residents in recreational activities.
5. Encourage residents to maintain optimal level of independence by encouraging them to maintain their personal hygiene, participate in activities of recreation, maintaining their personal household chores and activities of daily living.
6. Participates in developing and updating service plans for residents.
B. Standard II:
The resident assistant will adhere to the policies of Elizabeth Residence Bayside in the performance of his/her duties.
Performance Criteria:
1. Be accountable for the delivery of care as delegated.
2. Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships.
3. Practice careful, efficient and non-wasteful use of supplies and linen. Will notify designated Elizabeth Residence Bayside representative of dwindling supplies.
4. Performs other delegated duties, including, but not limited to:
a. Assisting residents in admission to Residence.
b. Arranging transportation of residents.
c. Planning outside activities, etc.
C. Standard III:
A safe environment will be provided for all residents, employees and visitors.
Performance Criteria:
1. Provide and maintain a safe environment according to Elizabeth Residence Bayside’s policy regarding safety, including, but not restricted to fire, electrical hazards, internal/external control, and reporting potential/actual hazardous conditions.
2. Recognizes unsafe conditions and takes action immediately.
3. Communicates unsafe conditions to Resident Director.
4. Understands proper use of emergency equipment specific to his/her responsibilities.
5. Does not leave a resident in distress unattended.
6. Is aware of the where about of all residents.
7. Initiate and participates in fire drills.
D. Standard IV:
Performs housekeeping duties as necessary so as to maintain a clean, aesthetic environment.
Performance Criteria:
1. Daily cleaning of bathrooms
2. Clean and un-clutter common living areas and resident’s rooms.
3. Immediate clean up of any spills or stains.
4. Weekly linen changes in resident rooms, immediate linen changes for any soiled bed clothes and prn.
5. Soaks any soiled linens or residents clothes if soiled, rinses and launders.
6. Launders residents clothes on a daily basis using appropriate water temperature and detergents.
E. Standard V:
The Resident Assistance is expected to have necessary skills to perform job functions. Such as classes required by state and Elizabeth Residence Bayside. Notifies Resident Director if unsure of a certain skill.
Performance Criteria:
1. Assess areas of job related knowledge needs, and communicate needs to Resident Director.
2. Maintain current CPR and First Aid Certification.
3. Takes Fire Safety Class.
4. Accurately takes a residents temperature, pulse, respiration count and blood pressure.
F. Standard VI:
Confidentiality of information regarding the resident will be maintained by the Resident Assistant.
Performance Criteria:
1. Assure that the residents personal, social, and medical background is shared only with Resident Director, RN, Administrator, other Resident Assistants, and family members only.
2. Communicate information regarding the resident only to authorized persons.
G. Standard VII:
Performs duties to ensure smooth operation of Elizabeth Residence Bayside and enhance communication among residents and staff.
Performance Criteria:
1. Proper phone etiquette is observed, e.g.:
a. Answer phone: “Hello, Elizabeth Residence Bayside, _________, speaking.”
b. Write down phone messages and give to appropriate person.
2. Inform designated representative supply status.
IV. Major Equipment Used:
Numerous pieces of equipment essential for resident care, including but not limited to washer, dryer, stove, microwave oven, bath chair, vacuum cleaner and Apollo unit.
V. Physical Demands:
A. Standing and walking 85%
B. Sitting 15%
C. Required bending, pushing and lifting.
VI. Work Environment:
A. Generally clean and pleasant environment.
B. Exposed to potential physical and/or verbal abuse by confused frightened residents.
C. Stress under heavy work load and meeting time schedules.
VII: Qualifications:
A. Education:
High School completion.
B. Training and experience:
1. CPR, First Aid, Fire Safety, Universal Precautions, Medication In-service, and classes dealing with confused residents.
2. Nursing Assistant experience helpful.
3. Cooking experience helpful.
C. Time required to learn job.
