Inter-Faith Food Shuttle envisions a hunger free community. We feed our neighbors, teach self-sufficiency, grow healthy food, and cultivate innovative approaches to end hunger. As a member of Feeding America, the Food Shuttle distributes over 9 million pounds of food per year, 37% of which is fresh produce. From Grocery Bags for Seniors, BackPack Buddies, and School Pantries; to Community Health Education and Mobile Markets; Catering and Culinary Job Training; and Community Gardening and a 14-Acre Farm; we go directly to the point of need to empower people and overcome the burden of hunger. 

The Seasonal Farm Production Assistant is responsible for providing production assistance on the Farm in managing and maintaining crops, equipment, and facilities. This position works closely with Farm staff and volunteers to ensure program goals and needs are met. This position is based at the Farm, but travel to the Malone Center and to other locations in our service area is required as needed. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in crop production and operations to include transplant preparation, soil preparation, pest and weed mitigation, harvest and post-harvest handling using Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs)
  • Work directly with volunteers and articulate clear objectives, communicate correct and safe use of equipment, demonstrate proper cultivation and harvest techniques, and guide and assist other tasks
  • Perform grounds maintenance to include mowing and trimming
  • Follow farm safety guidelines and safe food handling guidelines
  • Perform maintenance and cleaning of tools, equipment, and facilities
  • Fill in for roles traditionally held by coordinators and/or volunteers as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent reading, writing, and math skills required
  • North Carolina Driver’s License and an insurable driving record required
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Teams)
  • Ability to work positively and supportively with a team required
  • Ability to work steadily and independently with minimum supervision required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural competency to work with participants of all demographics and backgrounds required
  • 1+ year(s) of successful experience in farming preferred
  • Experience operating hand tools, power tools, riding mowers, tractors, pallet jacks, forklifts preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Frequent physical work in outdoor settings in all weather conditions and temperatures is required with extended hours as needed.
  • The noise level is typically low to moderate.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have manual dexterity, corrected vision, speech, and hearing to normal range or special accommodations made of sufficient nature for completion of assigned tasks.
  • Must be able to safely lift 40 lbs. unassisted.
  • Must be able to frequently bend and/or kneel to perform ground-level tasks.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS   Pay Rate Range: $18.56 to $20.11 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.
