About The Role: The Veterinary Assistant is responsible for assisting Veterinarians and Certified Veterinary Technicians in performing various veterinary procedures, including conducting health exams, administering vaccinations and medical treatments, performing diagnostics, completing clinical laboratory tests, and recording findings and assessments. This position may also assist veterinarians in surgery, including intubation, inducing/monitoring animals under anesthesia, and performing humane euthanasia. Assistants will also help maintain a clean, efficient, and healthy environment for animals being treated or boarded at the clinic. The Veterinary Assistant is a crucial part of the medical team and is responsible for advocating for the patient and educating the clients.
Compensation: $19/hour + depending on experience
Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities:
- Client/Patient Interaction
- Admits patients to the hospital and ensures all admittance paperwork is completed correctly.
- Provides counseling and compassion for clients and answers their questions unless it is clear that the attending doctor should do so.
- Ensures the safety of pets, clients, and associates by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs.
- Obtains relevant information and history from clients maintaining proper and complete medical records.
- Exam Room
- Performs basic examinations of patients and records findings in the medical records.
- Vaccinates pets. Follow manufacturers’ directions as well as AAFP guidelines for placement of injectable vaccines at appropriate sites.
- Answers questions and educates clients about basic pet care and procedures, including but not limited to nutrition, internal and external parasite control, immunization protocols, the administration of medications, spay and neuter procedures, and behavior and obedience training.
- Emergency-Care & Surgery
- Provides basic life support, including CPR, airway maintenance, and oxygen therapy.
- Assists with patient procedures and surgeries, including anesthetic induction and monitoring, pre-and post-operative patient care.
- Recordkeeping & Administrative
- Notes all client conversations, observations in medical records, and document changes in the medical or mental status of animals.
- Creates estimates and invoices for services rendered and verifies charges for outside labs and services.
- Performs clerical and administrative work.
- Housekeeping
- Cleans and maintains equipment and prepares and sanitizes surgery suites.
- Maintains supply lists and stocks treatment rooms and wards.
- Cleans all rooms, wards, sinks, and tubs.
- Nursing Care
- Assists Veterinarians and Technicians in tasks required to maintain communication with clients, care of patients (animals), and required inventory.
- Admits and rooms patients and gets initial patient information from the client.
- Using muzzles when needed restrains patients during procedures, exams, x-rays, sample collections, etc.
- Administers medication fills prescriptions, and educates clients on medication use and side effects.
- Performs basic animal care.
- Assist with other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience Needed:
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Previous experience in a veterinary clinic is required.
- Requires certification or the ability to be certified as a Veterinary Assistant.
Skills Required to be Successful:
- Knowledge of medical procedures and animal handling.
- Must have computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Must be able to demonstrate good judgment and manage stressful situations.
- Must have the physical and mental capacity to perform in a fast-paced, challenging environment.
- Excellent communication skills, a sense of urgency, and working harmoniously with teammates is required.
- Must be dependable, demonstrate a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn.
- Strong working knowledge of common veterinary technical duties and procedures combined with the appropriate level of competency required to support the veterinary clinic.
