Stevens Engineers & Constructors has an excellent opportunity for an entry level and highly motivated Junior Estimator to join our Chicagoland Operations Team, based out of our Hobart, Indiana office.  This individual will be responsible for assisting the Chicagoland Operations Team in the bidding process, including preparation of new estimates.  The Junior Estimator will also create, maintain, and distribute all departmental documentation including bid invites and preparing client proposals and will learn to transfer project information in an accurate and complete manner.  The job mainly entails helping the Lead Estimators, Estimators or Project Managers make profitable and competitive bids by assisting with the cost information needed for construction and maintenance projects.  The ideal candidate will be client focused and will work well independently and as part of the Project Team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Partnering with Lead Estimator, Senior Estimators or Project Managers to learn the following estimating skills:

  • Reading plans and preparing quantity takeoffs, trade bid lists
  • Understanding the job scope process including site logistics, unforeseen and existing conditions, and constructability issues.
  • Understanding costing.
  • Developing and maintaining productive subcontractor relationships.
  • Provide support to Project Manager and Senior Estimators to further develop skills.

Reviewing proposal specifications and drawings, attend pre-bid meetings, etc. to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.

Preparing estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work and soliciting pricing from qualified vendors and subcontractors.

Preparing and assemble other information to be submitted with the proposal, such as project organization chart, personnel resumes, unit prices, corporate safety information, price breakouts, quantities, schedules and insurance information.

Maintaining files of working documents as back-up for the estimate, including current information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, sales brochures, price lists, etc.

Supporting other Estimating Unit personnel as required through assistance with computer work, preparation of one or more discipline estimates, etc.

Researching, negotiating and preparing purchase orders and subcontract for awarded projects, including obtaining the necessary insurance requirements.

Preparing internal job setup documentation, including Award of Contract form, code of accounts, quantity sheet and copy estimate file.

Participating in pre-job meeting with project management personnel.

 

SKILL FACTORS

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are a must.

Ability to participate in presentations.

Strong organizational skills.

Ability to independently organize work assignments and meet critical deadlines.

Work hours as required to meet scheduled dates and time frames.

Understands construction and the different trades.

Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, Project, Outlook and become familiar with InEight Estimating software, P6 software and Viewpoint.)
