Summary

We are a small public accounting firm that provides payroll services to 80+ payroll clients. Each client varies with their payroll needs and requirements, so this position must be able to work in a high volume, fast-paced environment. The Payroll Clerk is responsible for overseeing all aspects of payroll and employee benefits for multiple clients, so a high degree of discretion, professionalism, and respect for confidentiality is required. This role requires a strong understanding of payroll processes, as well as a proactive and driven mindset. The Payroll Clerk must be organized and able to work proactively as multiple timelines are required to be met effectively and efficiently. 

 

Qualifications

  • Perform complex payroll duties with a high degree of skill and accuracy.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Type at an acceptable rate of speed.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Have a minimum of a high school diploma.
  • 2 years of payroll experience preferred.
  • Able to multitask and prioritize.
  • Record-keeping techniques.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Work independently.
  • Have a good understanding of telephone techniques and etiquette.
  • Trained in handling confidential business matters and information with discretion.
  • Attention to detail. 
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Can work effectively with Microsoft Excel Microsoft Word.

 

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex payroll tasks for approximately 80+ payroll clients.
  • Monitor changes in payroll-related data; prepare changes, corrections, or adjustments as necessary.
  • Respond to questions from clients and/or taxing agencies regarding the interpretation of payroll tax liabilities and withholdings.
  • Complete tax liability filings and payments as they pertain to each client promptly. 
  • Complete quarter-end filings and annual filings for each client.
  • Prepare W2s and 1099s at the end of the year for multiple clients. 
  • Process and record specialized payroll services such as Worker's Compensation and unemployment audits. 
  • Maintain records of individual earnings, deductions, and related data, and process retirement. 
  • Verify and input sick leave, holiday pay, and vacation time earned/used as needed.
  • Process payroll timely and effectively as well as meet timelines.
  • Analyze payroll reports and withholdings for reasonableness.

Training

You will train under a payroll manager for 120 days who has 15 years of experience. This training will be instructed with direct supervision and teaching. Once the 120 days of training has been mastered, you will begin processing payroll on your own with supervisory and managerial review. Your immediate supervisor and management will directly assist with quarterly filings and annual filings for 4 quarters for quarterly filings and 2 years for annual filings and will then assist as needed thereafter.
