Youth Program Assistants will be expected to lead activities, oversee the safety of all students, and assist the Youth Program Coordinator with program planning. It is expected that Youth Program Assistants will take on leadership responsibilities to directly assist the Program Coordinator with their daily duties i.e. tracking attendance, communicating with families, leading activities and group management tactics, and the overall upkeep of positive energy at the NLL and LIT Programs! Youth Program Assistants will report to the Youth Program Coordinator.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Help plan and implement a leadership training program for middle and high school youth, esp. related to career readiness, climate change action, and positive youth development.
Work directly with the Youth Program Coordinator to organize and execute a weekly schedule, including service learning activities, field trips, etc.
Greet families during drop-offs and pick up.
Assist the Youth Program Coordinator in addressing the ongoing needs of the students and parents
Implement the program procedures effectively to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants
Coordinate with the Youth Program Coordinator and Youth Program Director to obtain snacks/meals for the youth for each program day.
Observe, monitor, and participate in enrichment activities
Efficiently redirect inappropriate student behaviors and implement the program discipline system to effectively monitor and guide proper student behavior
Support the emotional and social development of the youth; help them develop leadership skills by planning and implementing leadership curriculum
Report any concerns and questions regarding the program to the Youth Program Coordinator and/or Youth Program Director
Maintain accurate and organized records, including: attendance, incident reports, permission slips, etc.
Assist in set-up and clean-up of program space before/after the program
Attend weekly staff meetings and weekly program team meetings
Arrive on time and ready to work.
Provide effective and consistent supervision for all youth in the program.
Ensure the safety and safe keeping of all equipment, tools, and materials on-site and off-site.
Maintain a friendly yet firm professional/mentor relationship with all youth.
Demonstrate a high moral standard and positive attitude towards the needs of all youth.
In conjunction with the rest of the NLLP team, work to create meaningful learning experiences for all participants.
100% participation and engagement when on the clock with youth.
Continually keep youth active and engaged in fun and challenging activities while maintaining a safe & healthy environment
Organize and communicate daily activities and plans with students.
Act as a role model to all students attending the program.
Interact with children, parents/guardians, and co-workers in a professional manner at all times.
Immediately report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors or abuse relating to youth
Youth Program Assistants may be asked to drive a passenger van for Field Trips and Outings.
Provide supervision for students while they are transported to and from various activities.
Attend overnight trips with youth, which may involve: Backpacking, camping, air travel, etc.
Be willing to step in to assist with ANV’s other youth programs (After School Program, Camp ANV, etc.) as needed
Knowledge & Skills
2+ years working in youth development i.e. at a leadership development program or teaching/tutoring children preferred
Must have an exceptional cooperative work ethic, excellent communication skills, and the ability to rise to the occasion with a positive attitude when unexpected tasks need to be completed.
Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible
Enjoy being with students and foster their academic, social, emotional, and physical development through the duties outlined above
Familiar with the best current youth development and management practices.
Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with teens, parents, community partners and residents.
Ability to interact with all age levels
Strong personal motivation, initiative, follow through and commitment.
Physical Aspects of the Job
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to students.
Ability to observe student behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist students in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of youth.
Some physical requirements of the Youth Program Assistant position could be endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and farm activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate student activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
