Shelter Advocates provide support for survivors of domestic violence and their children in a confidential shelter setting, working daily with clients in a trauma-informed environment, ensuring clients' emotional and physical needs are met.

We are currently hiring full and part-time Shelter Advocates to work rotating shifts including some weekends. These are AWAKE hours.

Shelter Support Services

  • Provide light cleaning of resident’s rooms and common areas.
  • Facilitate the upkeep of the shelter, reporting any issues to the Shelter Coordinator.
  • Orient clients to shelter and house rules.
  • Ensure that house rules are practiced in a compassionate trauma-informed environment.
  • Support shelter security and ensure it complies with all rules and regulations of agency policies.
  • Document shelter happenings and client activities as necessary.
  • Oversee the shelter environment and activities.
  • Create and support an environment for healing and support for victims seeking safety.
  • Support the daily operations of the shelter offices.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Experience working with individuals affected by trauma or in crisis (will train).

Experience working in a shelter, group home or similar environment (preferred but not required)

The ability to work multiple shifts (a MUST)

Customer service experience is highly regarded

Excellent computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office (preferred)

Experience in crisis intervention (preferred)

Experience answering a 'hotline' (crisis, suicide, etc...) - (will train).

Knowledge of domestic violence and sexual assault and its effects on the survivor, their families and the community is a definite PLUS.

Be able to pass a background and drug test (a MUST).

Have up-to-date Ohio driver's license and vehicle insurance (a MUST).

Commitment

Work shifts include evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays to ensure adequate coverage of the shelter program.

Supervises: No supervisory responsibilities

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED required. An Associate degree in a human services-related field preferred; relevant experience may be substituted in lieu of a degree.

Employment is contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory Criminal Background Check and drug screen.

Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with less than 6 points on their driving record; proof of current valid vehicle insurance, and have their own reliable transportation during work hours.
