Development Communications Director
Job Purpose
The Development & Communications Director is responsible for the leadership of all of OFC’s development and communications activities. The position, oversees, develops and implements a comprehensive, long- and short-term development plan to strengthen financial support and position Our Family Coalition in accord with its mission, goals and objectives. At the same time this position drives the organizational thought leadership nationally, overseeing the curation and production of original content about intersectional LGBTQ+ families and family-building which establish a national standard in accuracy, clarity, and effectiveness. This position will be charged with developing and implementing fundraising strategies, external and internal communications strategies to meet or exceed OFC’s annual and long-term revenue and community impact goals. They will also oversee development related marketing and communications efforts as part of their responsibilities. This position reports to the Executive Director. Annual pay is 100K.
Development & Communications Director Responsibilities
Development and Fundraising Strategy
Identify weaknesses in current event fundraising efforts, individual giving campaigns, and donor cultivation, and implement methods for improvement;
Develop annual fundraising strategy and work with Executive Director
Create coordinated branding, messaging and marketing to support fundraising initiatives
Developing and executing Annual Development Plan
Planning, managing and evaluating fundraising campaigns and activities; particularly with individual donors and corporate sponsors
Coordinating and collaborating with ED on:
o foundation prospecting and tracking/maintaining tracking spreadsheets
o grant applications and reporting
o relationship management
o Answering donor inquiries in a timely fashion
o Maintaining and regularly updating NEON donor information and NEON fundraising campaigns
o Relationship management
Development and Implementation of Communications Strategy
Working in partnership with the Executive Director to oversee policy initiatives and smart community responses, including developing and implementing relevant advocacy, public education and policy campaigns;
Representing Our Family Coalition and the interests of LGBTQ families at meetings and interagency collaborations;
Engaging in public speaking opportunities at conferences, to media outlets and in a variety of other contexts;
Developing and overseeing the implementation of the annual communications plans that meet short- and long-term organization goals that are aligned with the mission, vision and objectives of OFC;
Conducting targeted outreach and messaging to diverse ethnic, linguistic family structures, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds;
Oversee the working collaboration between the OFC programs team, Programs Director and communications team to promote the robust programming initiatives.
Develop OFC’s evaluation framework to assess the strengths of the organization’s communications initiatives.
Oversee the creation of materials for fundraising campaigns and communications
o Provide funder/donor updates to ensure website and email blasts are up to date
o Create and keeping donor / funder information on OFC website up to date.
o Building a culture of fundraising within the organization and among key partners.
o Creating template solicitation messages and materials for the fundraising team
o Collaborating with the Leadership Team to ensure fundraising messaging includes most up to date “wins” and accomplishments
o Supporting management of the organization’s budget and fundraising income programs
Stay current on the laws affecting planned giving
Take on additional projects or responsibilities as assigned by the ED
Content Development and Branding
Content includes blog posts, web pages, infographics, webinars, and PDF downloads distributed via the organization's website, social platforms, educational webinars, and fee-based trainings and reports directly to the ED to ensure alignment with organization mission and priorities, and works with members of the Leadership Team, OFC staff, and content-area experts in the community to source the highest quality material.
Major Gifts Cultivation
Cultivate a relationship-centered culture of major gift procurement through demonstrated examples and trainings with staff
Identify major donor prospects, develop, and implement individual cultivation plans;
Increase size of donor population and employ moves management to secure larger gifts from existing supporters;
Bring new thinking and best practices to attracting, stewarding, retaining individual donors capable of giving major gifts annually;
Oversee recognition activities for all major gifts (e.g., giving levels, donor rolls, etc.), and establish new programs as necessary.
Develop and implement a planned approach to individuals; assign responsibility for donors and prospect cultivation and solicitation to members of staff, volunteers and Board Members Identifying and stewarding prospective individual and corporate donors
Corporate and Private Foundation Giving
Attract new corporate and foundation prospects and to strengthen current relationships;
Assist senior Leadership in developing new corporate engagement and volunteer opportunities
Oversee recognition and stewardship program for donors including the implementation of procedures for the processing and acknowledging gifts
Events Management
Manage and develop efforts, strategy, and project plans for all events, including follow-up cultivation;
Cultivate, secure, and manage sponsor and event-related partnership;
Collaborate with staff leadership from all departments to improve event program quality and drive revenue.
Staff/Administrative Management
Manage, hire and fire all development staff, volunteers and interns with an emphasis on mentoring and professional development;
Establish overall performance objectives and set specific expectations parameters, performance metrics, and quality outcomes for direct reports;
Revise team structure and job descriptions as needed and within budget parameters
Ensure an environment of trust, respect, openness, and collaboration.
