ABOUT THE DISTRICT
Klamath County Fire District 1 (KCFD1) is located in Klamath Falls (south-central Oregon). The Department provides structural and wildland fire protection, emergency advanced life support, ambulance transport, inter-facility ambulance transport, hazardous materials response and emergency rescue. In 2021 KCFD1 responded to over 9000 calls. Personnel selected will be scheduled to work a 56-hour (48/96 shift schedule) and are represented by IAFF Local 890.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

• 18 years of age and older
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid Oregon driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record throughout the duration of employment.
• Successfully complete Klamath County Fire District 1’s hiring process
• Successfully complete Klamath County Fire District 1 pre-employment background check, “Fitness for Duty”/NFPA 1582 medical physical exam and drug test

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
The Oregon State Firefighter Apprenticeship is a registered apprenticeship program though the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industry (BOLI) and the OSFFJATC. This is a two-year program and employment will start September 25, 2023. This program includes; paid on-the-job training, a required 12-week Fire Academy, and paid tuition for required academic classes at Klamath Community College (KCC).

FIRE ACADEMY
The 12-week academy is a Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm schedule. The academy may be longer at the discretion of the training division. The academy start date is September 25, 2023 and is scheduled to be completed by the second week of December. The fire academy is physically demanding and includes firefighter and EMS training, both hands-on and written testing, and physical fitness throughout the program.

POST ACADEMY
After the 12-week fire academy, apprentices will be assigned to a Field Training Coach (FTC) at a designated Klamath County Fire District 1 station and will spend most of his/her time with their assigned FTC as they receive structured on-the-job training (OJT). The work schedule is 48-hour shifts on and 96 hours off shift. The apprentices will work approximately 120 days a year after completing the 12 week academy, minus any time for accrued leave usage as outlined per the Local 890 collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

WORK BENEFITS
• Retirement - KCFD1 participates and contributes to the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). The employee is required to pay the 6% employee contribution.
• Medical, Dental, and Vision - KCFD1 pays 100% of all health insurance premiums for each employee and their families. KCFD1 participates in an IRS Section 125 Flexible Spending Account. In addition, KCFD1 contributes to a HRA/VEBA for all eligible personnel; currently $3,416-$7,971 annually, depending on plan election.
• Paid Vacation - Vacation is accumulated at seven (7) shifts per year and increases with longevity.
• Paid Sick Leave - Accrues at the rate of eight (8) hours per full calendar month of employment.
• PTO- Accrues at the rate of eight (8) hours per full calendar month of employment.
• Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance - KCFD1 provides a $20,000 AD&D policy.
• Additional benefits - Other benefits include optional deferred compensation plans, KCFD1 paid Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and other optional supplemental coverages.

ACADEMIC CLASSES
After the 12-week fire academy, the academic requirements include Math 60, Writing 121, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, ICS 100, 200, 700 (online), Introduction to Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Technical Report Writing, EMT Part 1 and II, and building construction for Fire Fighters.

• The top 20 highest scoring applicants will move onto a panel interview.
• Veterans will receive an automatic invite to the panel interview if application and video are completed.

PANEL INTERVIEW
Projected panel interviews will be scheduled between; Monday, July 10th through Thursday, July 20th and is subject to change with prior notice. The top 20 applicants and veterans will be invited for an in person panel interview.

CHIEF’S INTERVIEW
Projected Chief Interviews will be scheduled between; Monday, July 24th through Friday, July 28th and is subject to change with prior notice.

The top 10 candidates will be invited to for a Chief’s interview with the Fire Chief and his designees. The top 6 candidates will be given a Conditional Apprenticeship offer.

CONDITIONAL APPRENTICESHIP OFFER
All conditional apprenticeship offers are contingent upon successful completion of an extensive fit-for-duty medical evaluation, drug screen, and full background investigation.

VETERANS PREFERENCE
Veterans’ preference will be applied in accordance with Oregon Revised Statue (ORS 408.230). Under Oregon law, armed forces veterans who successfully complete the initial application screening and meet the minimum qualifications for the position will be awarded preference points.
