The sweetest parents, 20 minutes outside of Boston, seek a FULL-TIME LIVE-IN NANNY for their 21-year-old daughter with special needs. She has cerebral palsy and communicates through a system on her iPad, some signs, and vocalizing, as well as reaching. She primarily uses a power chair for mobility as well as getting pushed in a manual chair. She has a gait trainer, and while she doesn’t use it for getting from place to place, she uses it for strength and movement. One parent works from home and the other works both in the office and at home.
A predictable schedule is Monday-Friday from 6:30-7:30am and 3-6/6:30pm (split shift), as well as one weekend day for up to 10 hours (times vary). The nanny will have two weekend days OFF per month. While there is a fair amount of predictability, there is some shifting as needed. For example, some flexibility is required for early school releases, an evening event (typically one night every couple of weeks until 8:30pm), and help with the bedtime routine when dad travels. Parents provide the weekly schedule in advance and any plans for work travel or otherwise. As much notice as possible is provided!
Their daughter attends school during the day, five days a week but her last day will be Oct 13th. At that time, she will likely start a self-directed program involving various activities and therapies out in the community. During school days, the nanny will work from 6:30-7:30am and will be responsible for getting her up, dressed, and fed, as well as doing some physical therapy stretching before getting her off to school. She gets to and from school by bus. The nanny will work again in the afternoons, likely from 3:00pm to 6:00 or 6:30pm. The afternoon shift starts at 2pm on Wednesdays.
The nanny would work one longer weekend day for up to 10 hours (ie. per week as well as one evening. The family also has a 15-year-old son, who does not need any care from the nanny, except an occasional ride before he gets his driver’s license in December.
Responsibilities include meal prep, dressing, showering, and toileting (she can use the toilet with assistance but cannot always communicate when she needs to “go." She does well when taken to the restroom on a regular basis and wears diapers in the event that she can’t make it), picking up from school in order to get to physical therapy or occupational therapy sessions, feeding, etc. Household duties are minimal and only consist of picking up after her and straightening her room and her laundry.
She loves to listen to music (especially Coldplay and Taylor Swift), take walks, bake, cook, read, and do art activities. The nanny will integrate physical movement and stretching throughout the day. Training on stretching and exercises will be provided by the parents and therapists.
Great opportunity and experience for someone looking to work in physical therapy or the world of special needs! Their child is incredibly happy, grounded, and a joy to be around. She loves her caregivers and as much as one gives to her, they will get back from her. The family is ideally seeking someone with experience working with persons with special needs. Someone who is reliable has an upbeat personality, takes initiative, but is willing to ask questions. Someone who has humor is able to be flexible, and able to communicate with the parents when and if something doesn’t feel right. They are a very caring and respectful family and treat their caregivers with respect, honoring their privacy and need for downtime. Pay is $25-30/hour + paid vacation. Start date is ASAP!
The current nanny of two years will be staying in the area and is happy to help train the new nanny to help her get settled. As their daughter transitions out of high school, there is some unknown and the days will be created and initiated by her parents and support workers who will be hired in the coming months.
