Mighty Earth is launching a new campaign to transform and decarbonize the auto industry. The transportation sector is responsible for a shocking 24% of world emissions – largely due to cars.
As the birthplace of the auto industry – and the home to some of the world’s largest car companies – Michigan is ground zero for the fight to clean up our cars.
This campaign is not just about tailpipe emissions. By the end of next decade, most of the carbon from cars will actually come from the material used to make them. For example; aluminum production accounts for 2% of world carbon emissions – steel accounts for 8%. And the auto industry is a leading culprit in driving demand for these dirty products.
Further, the auto industry is causing major harm throughout Michigan. General Motors’ (GM’s) parts supplier, Tribar has released vast quantities of the hexachrome, a known carcinogen, into the Huron River. Meanwhile, in Detroit, AK Steel is contributing to air pollution in urban neighborhoods. GM rewarded them by naming the company “supplier of the year.”
GM’s destruction spans almost all continents. In Guinea, mining for bauxite – the key ingredient used to make the aluminum in car bodies – is driving rampant environmental destruction on Indigenous territories. Bauxite mining there is poised to destroy 4,700 square km of natural lands – threatening entire communities, cultures, livelihoods, and water supplies. Meanwhile, in China, the coal-fired smelters producing GM’s aluminum are run by the forced labor of Uyghurs, the ethnic Muslim minority persecuted by the Chinese government.
Michiganders deserve better. That’s why we are launching a campaign to fundamentally decarbonize and change the auto industry.
Who you are:
We are looking to hire paid interns throughout Michigan. We are especially looking for applicants at University of Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne State, but are open to hiring students at other universities throughout Michigan. We are looking for candidates who:
Are outgoing
Enjoy planning public actions and events (or are excited to learn how)
Are passionate about climate change, the environment and human rights
Are self-starters who take initiative and get things done
Scope of work:
Represent Mighty Earth on your campus and to students and clubs
Plan and execute creative public actions to pressure auto companies to decarbonize
Drive turnout of students to events
Gather large numbers of petition signatures on campus
Apply pressure on auto companies by generating phone calls, letters, and social media posts aimed at them
Execute a plan to build a large group of engaged and excited students who are ready to mobilize and act
Generate media attention through op-eds, letters to the editor, and talking to reporters
Compensation:
This internship will pay $20 an hour and will require 15-20 hours/week of your time. The position lasts through December 12, 2022, with the potential for renewal for second semester.
