The Alliance for Retired Americans is seeking a bright, energetic intern to work in its Communications and Government and Political Affairs Departments for 15-32 hours per week during the Winter/Spring semester. The Alliance works with retired activists around the country to organize grassroots activism around a progressive political and economic agenda. Interning for the organization is a great way to gain exposure to the exciting world of legislative policy, communications, and field work as well as the labor movement.

$16.10 per hour
January 4 - May 26, 2023

Remote on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in-person on Mondays-Wednesdays-Fridays (covid vaccination required)

Communications
- Write for newsletter and web site
- Assist with social media outreach
- Compile press clips and track coverage of key news topics for references to retiree issues
- Develop press lists and media advisories for state events
- review web site for possible changes
- create graphics
- Work with field staff around the country to implement field plans
- Help manage member database

Government and Political Affairs
- Compile Congressional Voting Record which scores lawmakers on seniors' issues
- Monitor work of Congress as it pertains to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and Pensions
- Research/update data for fact sheets and web site
- Attend Congressional hearings of relevance to the organization
- Work with Alliance members in key Congressional districts on recess activities
- Respond to Alliance member inquiries
- Attend progressive coalition meetings with/on behalf of department staff
Desired qualifications include:
- A keen interest (and preferably some background) in progressive politics
- Excellent writing skills
- Willingness/ability to work with a wide range of people
- Graphics and web experience a plus
- Some college classroom experience preferred

For 21 years, we have enrolled and mobilized retired union members and other seniors and community activists into a nationwide grassroots movement advocating an agenda that respects work and strengthens families.
