At Sombrero, we have been serving San Diego-Style Mexican Food since 1984, and our vision is to continue to be a leader in the space through the integrity of our food and our people. We do this daily by executing our mission of serving quality Mexican food quickly, in a clean restaurant, with a smile and ensure each customer leaves satisfied.

The position will work closely between store level operations and the Sombrero office administration team, gaining a holistic understanding of how the Sombrero brand functions within and outside each individual Sombrero restaurant. Your journey with the Sombrero brand will consist of:
• Hands on training of restaurant operations.
• Working and interactions with restaurant guests, staff and store management.
• Shadowing, meetings and projects with admin team.
• Communications with vendors and strategic partners.
• Education on systems, strategic planning and brand execution.
• Performing independent job functions and tasks.

Our founder, Javier Correa Sr, started Sombrero Mexican Food with two $2,000 personal loans and literally built the business from the ground up. Today there are sixteen Sombrero locations throughout San Diego and southern California, and we continue to thrive through our strong branding, a great team of crewmembers and innovation. The Sombrero brand has evolved over the years in many ways, but when it comes to our food, customer service and operations we remain steadfast in nurturing and honoring our roots.
The Executive Restaurant Assistant/Intern position is designed to provide practical experiences in a professional work environment.

As an Assistant/Intern, the follow are Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Able to work in all areas of Restaurant Operations: Restaurant, Catering and Office.
• Assists with administrative tasks.
• Assists with restaurant tasks such as cooking, order taking, cleaning and deliveries.
• Follow cash handling procedures
• Ensure compliance of brand standards and employee code of conduct.
• Maintains constant awareness of safety issues, (i.e. broken glass, frayed electrical cords, leaks, broken locks and suspicious persons). Reports all safety incidents to Manager on Duty.
• Acts with responsibility towards all company property, supplies and equipment.
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Student currently enrolled at an accredited college or university, preferably in a business or hospitality program.
• Frequent standing and walking
• Ability to move and handle objects, frequently move and/or lift up to 25 pounds, and occasionally move and/or lift up to 100 pounds.
• Demonstrate ability to apply academic theory to the job situation through practical application.
• Follow all rules of protocol in effect in the field setting.
• Accept responsibility for professional conduct as indicated by courtesy and consideration of those encountered in the work situation, promptness in keeping appointments, completing assigned tasks, and positive attitude toward all activities required by the job situation.
• Exemplify ethical professional behavior evidenced by positive working relationships with all personnel, moral actions, and attention to confidentiality requirements.
• Participate effectively in group problem-solving processes demonstrated by direct involvement.
• Transfer academic theory to the practical job situation, recognizing strengths and areas of improvement of the academic preparation.
• Creative thinking – ability to demonstrate creativity in theory application during the internship.
• Solution-oriented, self-starter
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to take photos and upload.
• Basic math, reading and writing abilities.
• Proficient on Microsoft Word, Excel, and email.
• May be required to intern nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
• Some fluency in Spanish a plus, but not required.
• Valid Driver’s License.

Compensation: Hourly
Location: La Mesa/East County San Diego
Schedule: 16-20 hours per week, Tues/Wed (8-12pm), Additional Days Flexible
