POSITION SUMMARY
An Inclusion Camp Advocate is a support person who provides one-to-one assistance and support as needed in at Minnesota JCC summer camps; Camp Olami & Summer Quest (Minneapolis), Camp Butwin (Eagan), and Summer @ the J (St. Paul). The Inclusion Camp Advocate seeks to integrate a child/teen with a disability into camp programs to the maximum degree of involvement possible. Planning and foresight are required of the advocate especially when the activities/programming may need to be adapted to ensure the child/teen’s participation.

• Providing assistance (e.g., interpreting instructions, providing physical assistance, teaching social skills) in order to help the youth participant learn new recreation and leisure skills
• Encouraging social interaction between the youth with special needs and the group/participants
• Adapting both individual and group activities, as needed, to allow active participation by the youth
• Providing positive reinforcement or other behavioral intervention, as needed, to facilitate the youth’s involvement and acceptance in the group
• Promoting the child’s enjoyment in the program
• Responding to typical participant and staff concerns regarding the inclusion youth participant
• Role modeling best inclusive practices for both staff and other program attendees to promote full inclusion
• Developing anecdotal or written reports regarding the progress of the child after each program session for parents and the Inclusion Coordinator/Director
• Tracking the development of recreation and other skills from session to session via documentation and/or environmental analysis checklists, meeting goals and objectives set for the participant
• Supervise the health and safety of all participants
• Attend and participate in Inclusion Camp Advocate team meetings
