Waterfront Director Job Description

Lutherwood Camp and Retreat Center

Required Qualifications

Minimum Age – 20 years old with at least a year of college or equivalent


Desired Qualifications

Possess Lifeguard Certification and Boating License

Willingness to experience outdoor living and to teach/ learn new skills

Ability to accept supervision and guidance

Possess imagination, a sense of humor, patience, sincerity, enthusiasm, initiative, self-control, adaptability, willingness to learn, integrity, ingenuity, a sense of spiritual direction, and the presence of God in their life



To Whom Responsible

The Program Director in terms of application and employment, training and work assignments, as well as personnel policies and practices

The other Team Leaders in all areas relative to program activities, inter-staff responsibilities, and regular or special work duties



General Responsibilities

Be a positive Christian influence at all times and provide personal guidance when needed

Be responsible for the stewardship of all camp facilities and equipment

Represent the camp and its purpose in a positive manner when you are in public

Possess an attitude and actions which continually reflect that God lives within you and that you view your position as an opportunity to be in service

Lead and facilitate all Waterfront activities

Assist Team Leaders in camp programs like chapel, campfire, meals, singing, all-camp game, and other camp activities



Specific Responsibilities

Directly responsible for facilitating all waterfront activities

Schedule lifeguards for swimming and boating times in coordination with the Program Director. This will be for weekly campers and weekend groups

Set and ensure all safety policies around the waterfront and its equipment to protect all users

Keep waterfront clean and safe, tend to regular maintenance of equipment

Report all needed repairs and safety issues to Program Director and Maintenance Director

Teach cabin leaders, campers, and other staff how to use all waterfront space and equipment safely including the swim area, lifejackets, blob, canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, motorboats, tubes, wakeboards, waterskies, and more

Facilitate weekly swimming test of all staff and campers to discern which water activities will be safe for each person based on their swimming abilities

Schedule group usage of different waterfront areas including lifeguards and leadership with Program Director and Office Manager



Be responsible for supervising specific campers during cabin leaders breaks and general supervision and support during other camp activities



Spiritual Needs: To identify and assist with the spiritual needs of ALL people

Promote an atmosphere of Christian cooperation

Be a positive Christian influence at all times and be God’s witness in all your ways



Physical Needs: To identify and assist with the physical needs of ALL cabin leaders and campers by being responsible for their health, cleanliness, and safety

Guard campers from dangerous activities or circumstances

Make sure you are practicing good hygiene, sleeping habits, and eating habits while at camp



Emotional Needs: identify and assist with the emotional needs of all

Get to know and understand each colleague as quickly and as well as possible

Treat ALL staff and campers fairly and show loving concern for all aspects of their welfare

Strive to build self-esteem and self-value in campers and fellow staff



Program/ Activities

Be involved/participate in all camp activities, whether leading it or not

Lead activities such as games, mealtime, singing, and worship or campfire aspects as assigned by the Team Leaders

Supervise designated times of the campers’ day, including cabin clean-up, free time, canteen, and other camp activities.



Camper Discipline

Understand, follow, and enforce all camp policies and standards

Make sure that campers are behaving in an appropriate manner during all activities, including large group activities and meal times

Encourage respect for the property of others and for the camp’s facilities and equipment

When necessary refer discipline problems to their Cabin Leaders or Team Leaders



Other Specific Responsibilities

Assist in registration of the campers and weekly clean-up assignments

Maintain good public relations with the parents and campers

As a team member, assist other staff in any task that will enhance the outdoor ministry of Lutherwood Camp and Retreat Center

While most of the time you will be directing the waterfront, some weeks you may be asked to assist with other duties which may include: program needs, cabin leadership, maintenance, cleaning, and other activities
